Event-Based Surveillance - ECSA-HC Online Course Description
The "Event-Based Surveillance (EBS)" online course, offered by ECSA Health Community (ECSA-HC), is designed to enhance the capabilities of health professionals in implementing effective surveillance strategies. This course is vital for those looking to support and strengthen the continental Early Warning and Response (EWAR) capacity, in accordance with the African CDC's 2022 mandate. EBS plays a crucial role in the EWAR function of national surveillance systems, working alongside indicator-based surveillance (IBS) to provide a comprehensive approach to disease monitoring and outbreak response.
Throughout this course, participants will delve into the four main types of EBS: community, health facility, media, and hotline. Each type is explored in depth, covering the processes involved, the stakeholders, and the data sources and tools used for data capture and reporting. The curriculum is spread across five modules, including an introduction to EBS, community EBS, health facility EBS, media scanning and hotlines, and finally, monitoring and evaluation.
By the end of this course, learners will have a robust understanding of the operational aspects of EBS, equipped with the knowledge to implement these practices within their own countries to improve EWAR capacity. This training is essential for health professionals, surveillance officers, and public health practitioners who are keen on advancing their expertise in early warning systems and contributing to the global effort in disease surveillance and response.
